Contemporary Organic Architecture

Text drawn from an article of Carmine and Carlo Sarno - organic architects

“ I say that now is time for architecture to recognize its nature, to know that comes from life and its aim is the life as today we leave, therefore to be an intensely human thing.” By this sentence Frank Lloyd Wright, founder of Organic Architecture, grasps the principal nucleus of this new way to make architecture. No more spaces, architectural forms, functions, decorations, untied from the life, but all tightly connected to it; a very full life, natural and spiritual, individual and participating to civilization.
Organic architecture foundations is the dignity of the human being, a free creative, responsible man that must have a human scale space that helps him to grow, to show him his potentiality. The classic architecture ( Egyptian, Greek, Azteca, and so on…) is deficit, exalting an abstract concept about a man subordinate to an imposed absolute power, religious and political. Moreover almost all celebrating past architecture has searched for disintegrate the individual as a person, affecting him with giantism, opulence, exceeding wealth.
Organic architecture overturns this scenery: the man as individual person, unique and precious, so that announced in the Gospel, returns in the centre of architecture. “ Architecture doesn’t need monumentality, the only one is natural beauty “ said Wright. It is for this man, free, conscious, democratic, creative, that today we must project respecting his nature and spirituality.
For these reasons organic architecture develops itself from inside to outside, from the interior life that flows in space to outdoor.
Organic architecture and the environment are the same thing. Organic architecture as respects the interior life as respects the nature surrounding architectural work, it talks to nature by means a continuous space inside/outside, enriching the genius loci. The architectural organic work shares the place where it stands, it’s not added to the site, but integrated to nature.
The organic architectural work is a real organism, where the part and the all live together, in a systemic harmonic and vital way. Harmony is essential, the work is always a harmonic composition between the parts and the surrounding nature.
Organic architecture is harmony, beauty, joyful expression of life, serene, safety-catch, romantic, it stimulates the mind and imagination in a creative way.
Organic architecture is without style, unique and unrepeatable, because is tied to the man, to the site and to the time, three variables that never repeat themselves. So organic architecture is not a style, but a new world vision that respects the man and the nature in the deeper essence.
In that way, organic architecture puts itself like foundation and mother of all architectures respecting the nature: sustainable architecture, arcology, alternative architecture, ecology architecture, bioarchitecture and so on…). Organic architecture is the root of all these new “naturalistic” tendencies; the true background philosophy that ties the respect of nature to the individual growth as a person and part of civilization; it helps to avoid compartments that distort architecture from its deep essence like positive leaven for human civilization.
Frank Lloyd Wright first, Alvar Aalto and Bruce Goff after, have been the architects that placed the basic principles of organic architecture, a creative and unrepeatable architecture that has no style but only poetical common generational processes.
As real organic architecture is always changing considering the man, the site and the time, today in a full renewal of civilization whether in the knowledge field or in the social and technological field, we need a “contemporary organic architecture” adequate to the new man’s conditions, to the new sensitiveness, still conserving its principles and fundamental values. The true organic architecture follows the life’s mutations and doesn’t let itself crystallize in a style. Wright was a prophet of a new architecture in his time. Today, the world is different and we must create a contemporary organic architecture for our life.

organic architecture

The term "Organic Architecture" was coined by the famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), though never well articulated by his cryptic style of writing:
"So here I stand before you preaching organic architecture: declaring organic architecture to be the modern ideal and the teaching so much needed if we are to see the whole of life, and to now serve the whole of life, holding no traditions essential to the great TRADITION. Nor cherishing any preconceived form fixing upon us either past, present or future, but instead exalting the simple laws of common sense or of super-sense if you prefer determining form by way of the nature of materials..." - Frank Lloyd Wright, An Organic Architecture, 1939
